Project Statement:
The Rebel Movie is comprised of visual footage inspired by the audio that serves it. In the opening sequence, I use a blackened screen with three consecutive jump shots of myself – almost deflated at the start, then staring down the barrel of the lense to convey to the audience the seriousness of the piece. Tying my hair up was an attempt at showing ‘rolling up my sleeves’ as if to ‘get to work’. Exterior long shot from the interior of a swaying tree with overcast weather foreshadows the sombe attitude of the piece. Title sequence of “Maybe Wars Start In Bedrooms,” talks to how the movement of the ‘Pussy Hat Project’ and the Women’s Marches started. Throughout the video, we see montage shots of female Uni students studying, cooking, laughing or messing around irreverently – women are multifaceted. When in the audio, my spoken word piece references Trump’s quotes, I use jump cuts of Trump headlines to highlight the severity of the issues. Close up portrayed in “gnashing their terrible teeth,” as well as tweaking the colour temperature to hot, is meant to evoke an intense feeling for the viewer when I’m ‘all up in their grill’. My aim was to show the women I know as powerful and multiverse, but speaking about the Women’s marches so much led me to use footage from other sources including CNN news and MIALK’s YouTube channel (crowd singing and panning shots of march). This is not my footage and it is obvious that it’s not, but I believe it very much adds to the tone of the movement. The use of voiceover in my spoken word poetry piece aims to captivate the audience through storytelling while the moving image adds dramatic imagery and builds intensity to convey the films message. I believe I have used a broad range of cinematic techniques effectively – such as low angle and high angle shots to show different perspectives of power, warm/cool lighting and differing exposure levels to tell different emotional stories. Cutaway, ambient music, a different depths of field are used to control the visual story additionally. Over the shoulder shots, pans, focus shots, tilts and fast motion in post production is also used. I’m generally always sticking to the rule of thirds.
My inspiration was the Women’s Marches held throughout the world on January 21st, 2017. These women and men, children and grandparents who marched are my modern day rebels. This is because they so keenly, so bravely and courageously, are fighting for women’s rights and other minorities issues in the face of a newly elected anti-women president. To be marching and standing against the U.S government is a rebellious act. I’m in love with the millions of rebels that marched because in that act of defiance, they state that they will not accept this treatment and they want more for themselves and their children. Showing the song ‘I Can’t Keep Quiet’ is such an emotional ending to my film as it is so real to the core of the movement relating to speaking up about domestic violence and sexual harassment.
