For this project, I am producing an Instagram poetry account. Here, I share my original poems edited onto film photos I have taken. The nature of the film photos that backdrop the poems, only aim to visually compliment the theme of the story.
Since starting to post in July, I have already built a small audience on https://www.instagram.com/2000slovepoetry/. This has been achieved through posting onto popular poetry hashtags, gaining mutual followers on hash-tagged posts, one $8 ad campaign targeting a ‘poetry-consumer’ demographic, and promotion on my personal Instagram and Uni Twitter. Into the beta, I will continue to observe how the same methods affect my account growth, and look to expand promotional options through different social media platforms, e.g Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr and Pinterest.
In pandemic land, we see more than ever; that words of meaning, and stories we see ourselves in, are critical to keeping spirited and hopeful. Being a fan myself, I know ‘Insta poetry’ is adored, demanded and easily accessible to its audience. I aim to create poetry posts, inspired from my 5-year-old spoken-word background, that comforts, confronts, educates and evokes emotions from a special nostalgia. In a small way, I want to connect to people through stories and observational poems that grapple with the human experience – ultimately, for a less lonely experience during the lengthy NSW lockdown. We need connection.
