Grilling in the sun that is Ideation

Get Grilled has gone through it’s bulky process of ideation. Originally, titled ‘BCM B**chin’, our show undergoes intrinsic and soulful construction frequently. Ideation is fluid, and working on Get Grilled has proven that although decision-making can feel effortless, important moves are being made.

The evolution from Get Grilled on the drawing board to Get Grilled now – when we are ready to upload our first video within the next 24 hours – has been significant in some areas, but slight in others. We have always been set on the show’s feel and presentation. We always wanted to have an entertaining, fun-guy time; creating content we genuinely enjoyed and sharing it.

When my peer, Lauren Dawkins and I started to generate ideas about the intricacies of our show, passion led the way immediately. In short, Get Grilled was always going to be an excitable hybrid of the best Nickelodeon shows (iCarly, Drake & Josh), YouTube vlogs (David Dobrik, Jenna Marbles) and new wave late night comedy (looking at you Jimmy Fallon, Lily Singh and James Corden). We create in the way that we consume – rapidly, intensely and wholesome-ly. We bring what we love to watch, to life, but this time it’s us in front of the camera. Our process of ideation has been minimised due to us being so sure about what we were going to create from Day 1, even before enrolling in Making Media. Fortunately, 114 gives us the excuse to dedicate ourselves completely now.

We deliberated over which platform would bring our show to life, whether that be a podcast, a Twitch livestream, or Soundcloud rap?! No, not Soundcloud rap. But we ultimately decided that YouTube would be the vehicle where we could most show off our personalities and engage to the best of our abilities with the audience.

With our ideas ideas generated and our trajectory sought, AUDIENCE!

The needs of our audience are real. Predominantly an audience of young people, and young girls, the audience needs a comedic platform that accommodates the need for escapism and easy entertainment. But also, our audience needs the people who talk about real issues, especially in a world of taxing social media trends, outrageous beauty standards, fake news and fake internet celebrities. We are going to be real, honest, at times silly team.

Checklist now:

  1. Upload our first YouTube video
  2. Hit the #1 Trending and celebrate surpassing Pewdiepie
  3. Reflect, engage, read comments, learn about our audience
  4. Pitch the next video, plan, film and edit
  5. Bask in the glory of YouTube
